What My Husband Won't Travel Without

When I first met my husband nearly two decades ago, our travels revolved mainly around attending weddings and family gatherings, which meant packing numerous outfits and shoes. With the addition of young children to our family, our luggage load increased even more, and the fashion trends of the early 2000s didn't exactly make it easier. However, times have changed, and now our focus is on maximizing space, minimizing weight, and ensuring we're prepared for any weather conditions.

In this blog post, I'll share some essential items that my husband swears by and always includes in his carry-on suitcase.

  1. Bluffworks Ascender Chinos

These are now my husbands go-to travel pants. In addition, the versatility of their clothing has helped my husband replace his day-to-day wardrobe from dry cleaned wool suits to Bluffworks travel blazers. Hidden pockets for euros and even that essential deck of cards to pass the time on trains are easily accommodated in his Bluffworks threads, and teenagers’ spilled coffee nearly beads off so there’s no need to change in a cramped airplane bathroom. These are perfect for exploring the city during the day and can even be dressed up for a nice dinner at a restaurant where American athletic attire may be frowned upon.

  2. Under Armour golf shirts and Vineyard Vines golf shirts

These have replaced all of his other travel shirts. These lightweight shirts with performance fabrics are easily washed in an Airbnb or hotel sink and are usually dry for the next day of cathedrals and frescos. While Columbia long sleeve shirts from Amazon are great for brisk days in Switzerland and Austria, we generally travel in sunny seasons so two collared shirts are always in his backpack.

  3. Osprey Transporter Backpack

We love Osprey packs, and while we have several different ones, my husband uses this one the most. It unzips completely so that accessing your stuff is a breeze; You don’t have to take everything out to get something from the bottom. While it is one big open space, we use packing cubes so that’s not a big deal for us.

  4. 30L Eddie Bower Backpack

Sometime when we travel, we on’t want to use a smaller day backpack as one of our carry-on items. This is my husband’s favorite backpack to use during the day when we are traveling and a huge bonus is that it has fits into a small storage bag that we can place in our larger bag. While often our kids only want to carry a cell phone and wallet that will both fit in a small cross body bag, we have learned that someone in the family needs to have a backpack that is lightweight but will also fit jackets, travel umbrellas, snacks, and water bottles.

  5. Columbia Men’s Powder Lite Insulated Jacket

My husband almost never gets cold, so to save space coats are the first things he will eliminate. He found this jacket recently and loves it for travel for several reasons. It can serve as both his warm coat and his rain gear, so he only needs to pack one. It also folds up very compactly and takes up almost no space. I have a feeling he won’t be leaving this coat behind anytime soon when we travel to cooler destinations.

  6. Allbirds Mens Wool Runners

When traveling, having the perfect pair of shoes is so important. My husband loves these so much that he has them in several different colors and styles. They are perfect for any occasion: the airplane, exploring on a rainy day, an impromptu hike, or even a nicer restaurant. These would make a great birthday, Christmas, or Father’s Day gift.
